A "request" refers to obtaining a new "puzzle" from our servers by the captcha widget. Note that, by default, captcha widget only obtains a new "puzzle" when the user starts filling out the form, so you don't pay for every page load.

Technical
Instead of asking users to solve complex puzzles or track their behavior, Private Captcha solves an invisible cryptographic task in the background. The system automatically adjusts the task difficulty, ensuring smooth access for real users while making it too costly for bots to attempt. Cryptographic task provides equal security regardless of bot's intelligence level, making it effective even as AI technology improves. Which is hard to say about image/sound recognition tasks of other captchas.
On scale, bots exhibit different usage patterns and fingerprints statistics than real users. Detection of those patterns is part of the Private Captcha solution.
General
Unlike other solutions, that only have client-side code open, Private Captcha's backend code is also publicly available, making it easy to verify how user data is handled. Additionally, you can host Private Captcha on premises inside your own organization.
Private Captcha comes with many pre-built integrations for popular online platforms, such as WordPress, and packages for many popular programming languages (Javascript, Python, etc.). Additionally, our documentation provides detailed setup and migration guides and integration examples.
The Private Captcha widget offers two color themes (light and dark) and also allows to do lower-level customization, using CSS, ensuring seamless integration with your website. Additionally, you can hide the captcha widget altogether and make your custom UI integration, all while keeping security benefits.
Legal
Private Captcha does not use any client-side tracking technologies like cookies and does not retain Personally Identifiable Information (PII) on its backend systems. As part of service operation, user data is anonymized and aggregated, making it impossible to track to any individual user.
Private Captcha is powered by exclusively European suppliers. If you want to ensure that no data is transferred to other countries due to geographic routing, you can also use our EU-only API endpoints.
The data we collect belongs to you. We do not collect PII and aggregated data we do collect is not shared with any third-parties. Outside of the hosting companies that own servers on which data is stored, no other vendor can access it.
Short answer is no. Our non-EU servers are API servers only without any data persistance (any data copies are temporary in memory only). Any servers that store (and/or replicate) data on disk, are within the EU only.
Alternatives
The Private Captcha widget offers better accessibility for website visitors, regardless of their cognitive abilities. Also, it is a more lightweight (17 vs 220 kB) solution that does not require cookie banners and therefore reduces friction of using the website.
Self-Hosting
Private Captcha is considered to be used commercially when client integrations (website widget or client SDKs), connected to your installation, are used by for-profit legal entities or on websites that sell products or services. See license for details.
One license allows for a single installation of Private Captcha.
Email support during our business hours is included with Enterprise license only. Additional support services (e.g. setup help) are billed separately.
You can cancel your subscription at any time. Prepaid fees for monthly pricing are non-refundable.
While you can integrate self-hosted Private Captcha to your website or client application, it cannot be part of an offering where it forms a substantial part of the service or that competes with our managed offering.
Yes, you can use our SaaS API (e.g. api.privatecaptcha.com) via your own domain (e.g. privatecaptcha-api.mydomain.com). You can configure it in the Portal or contact support for more information.
